Helvetia Tavern

UPDATE: 8/6/08

ProfessorBurger is twaddling about masticating the ground round:

In my opinion, the Helvetia Tavern burger is the closest thing to an In-and-Out burger in Portland. Not only does it come in just two sizes-- a single patty and a double patty ("Jumbo")-- but it tastes pretty similar too. This is the kind of burger I dream about--thin patty with crisped edges (locally sourced beef is an added bonus), fresh chopped iceberg lettuce, oozing slice of American cheese, and house made "sauce" (mostly a mustard/relish/mayo) concoction on a lightly toasted sesame seed bun. The whole shebang comes with a pile of nicely salted fries still piping hot and glistening and from their recent grease bath. I topped off this gut bomb with a fountain RC cola (no Coke products here). Unless you live out near Hillsboro, a trip to Helvetia Tavern is a bit of trek--but this certainly qualifies as a "destination" burger. I'll be back...maybe again this weekend.

Cost= 4.25 for a single Cheeseburger

PattyDaddy goes to the one that everyone keeps talking about. Yep, there is name-dropping in the burger world and we eat it up:

Me and my photographer friend Erio went for a destination burger at the Helvetia Tavern, just north of Hillsboro, Oregon. We were not disappointed.

We both went for the Jumbo Cheese Burger and split a large fry. The Jumbo is served on an oversized bun and features: two quarter-pound, fresh (never frozen) pattys from Ponderosa Meats in Aloha; special sauce made from mayo, mustard, and relish; shredded iceberg lettuce, tomato, onion, and 8 or 10 pickle slices.

A deal at $7.75. The fries are hand cut daily and cooked up not-too-squishy and not-too-crisp. Erio chose a bottomless RC Cola for $1.75 and I had a PBR for $2.50.

Rustic and authentic old-west architecture. Friendly staff. Regular people.

You should check out Coleman's 9N on Highway 6 in Gales Creek by far a superior burger with lotsa choices too. They have a tractor pull burger with 2 half pound burgers with ham, bacon, cheddar and a fried egg. Our waitress said it weighed 25 oz. They even have one that is 4 1/2 burgers but she said no one has yet to order one.

Without question, one of the top 5 burgers in Portland, certainly worth the drive, I might go there right now!

I'm a Portland native living in Seattle. These burgers are one of the things I miss most about home. I make an annual pilgrimage every summer!
