Nevada: In N' Out (Las Vegas)

SpecialSauce keeps us asking why there isn't one here:

We all got Double Doubles, two patties with cheese and animal style, of course. For $5.39 our burgers came with fries and a medium drink.

Hamburgler and Pickles&Ammo sneak away from work with one of them kids from North Portland's classy drinkin' spot the Florida Room (did you know one just opened in Miami Beach as well?) to put down some quickies:

Normally shy away from the fast food, but vacation diets permit such extravagance (and everyone telling us we had to go there) and the mythical lore of the lords message drawing us in (there are Christian messages on some of the packaging apparently).

All were pleased with this. Pickles&Ammo was befuddled since he has never eaten anything but the Double Double Animal style that there were single patty burgers at the table. The production line in this place is awe inspiring. It puts JIT inventory babble and homemade GTD moleskines to shame all with only one register.

As far as fast food burgers In N' Out lives up to the reputation. It's dirt cheap, tasty, and makes you feel funny to order from the secret menu.

Yep, those fries are done up "Animal Style".

California: Father's Office (Santa Monica)

If your are from Portland and in LA you probably want to call this place "My Father's Office", but alas, it would be the wrong kind of twaddle. SpecialSauce is in LA:

While I was in LA I rode 30 miles out to Santa Monica with El Jimmy for some burgers at My Father's Office. This is quite the burger experience, not just dining but a sport. After waiting in line to get in (the place is tiny) you order at the bar and then it's a free for all to actually get a seat. Most everyone in there looked to be a professional of some sort and they were ruthless. We managed to get some standing room at one of the counters to enjoy our burgers. These were delicious, worth the ride and $12. Good beef, caramelized onions, arugula and cheddar on a french roll. The thin cut fries were good too.

Kenny & Zuke's - UPDATE

UPDATE: 3/5/07

Tittsworth was in town a week or so ago at Holocene and when not touring Asia and snacking on grasshoppers enjoys our own Kenny & Zuke's. You could catch up with him at SXSW next week or keep tabs here:

Recently while in Portland I was taken care of by some really amazing folks. In the process I was introduced to Kenny & Zuke's heavenly PASTRAMI BURGER. Not only was the pastrami fresh and the beef moist, but there's an impressive drink menu with regional, premium and even throwback sodas. Excuse the camera phone, it's all i had on me.

Shout out to coco & the crew! Can't wait to be back!!

ORIGINAL POST: 10/24/07

SpecialSauce called in a "snack break" and made the trip to Kenny & Zuke's with the Hamburgler:

From the size of the lunch crowd this place was serving up more hot beef then the fella's cruising by.

What you see there is a Pastrami Burger (its hiding under the cheese) with Swiss touching down at $11.75. Its was great. Bloody. And, had SpecialSauce giggling something about chocolate in her peanut butter.

They also have a regular burger for $8.50 with fries, cole slaw, or potato salad. Add cheddar, swiss, avocado, sauteed mushrooms, or carmelized onions for $1.00 a pop.

That sandwich was a whopper. A "Deli Club" with pastrami, turkey, swiss, tomato, and a price tag of $12.25.

Yakuza

SpecialSauce and Hamburgler pick up two new recruits to begin the tour of Japanese restaurants that serve our favorite brown biscuits. If you know of any let us know already, or you could just join the fray here:

So its $12.00, but sometimes when you spend that extra couple of dollars its worth it.

That there is Kobe beef with greens, Chevre, and some fried up potatoes (forgot the name of the cut), it was delicious.

One of the new recruits had to exclaim how well Chevre accompanies the beef in such a perfect way. I would agree. Hard to figure out why it is that a sushi joint can make an actual medium rare burger when so many others fail. Top Shelf!

Blueplate

SpecialSauce (got a break from all that modeling for Sweetpea Bicycles) and the Hamburgler continued the slider quest at Blueplate:

These sliders were fantastic. Some kind of basil secret sauce made it all worth the trip. $6.00 for 2 sliders with mashed potatoes. Add bacon or tomato for $1.00.

Would have to agree with Food and Ink that this place is pumping out better burgers on a electric skillet then many places around town. Go figure.

Beulahland UPDATE

UPDATED: 10/8/2007

Special Sauce, Snacks and Pic Wic have a return visit to Beulahland to get a handle on their vegiburger action.

We went to Beulahland for their Wednesday cheap burger night. From 6pm until the kitchen closes veggie burgers are $4 and meat are $3.

Special Sauce and Snacks went for the homemade veggie burgers(not vegan) one with cheese for and extra $0.50 and one without. This is one of our favorite veggie burgers in town though it can be a bit crumbly at times.

Snacks was disturbed by the brown mustard in the yellow mustard squeeze bottle. "It's like finding special sauce in the ketchup bottle". He was also saddened by the lack of weapon with this burger.

Pic Wic went for the Bacon Cheese burger. All burgers come with chips and not only a bonus side pickle but pickles on the burger too. And yes we were playing cribbage while snacking.

PREVIOUS POST: 9/5/2007

The "Hamburginator" chimes in after a recent stop at Beulahland with this tasty burger. I've experienced this one as well. Its not bad at all, but I always wish I had French Fries with it (I'll save the whining though...It's like complaining about a bar being smokey...kind of makes you look like an ass). Bonus Pickle!

Shanghai Tunnel

Vegiburger alert (vegan also available) from Portland Hamburglers "SpecialSauce" and "Snacks". Looks like the empire is re-expanding as well.

"SpecialSauce" and "Snacks" headed to the Shanghai Tunnel for happy hour burgers.

The B.O.M.B. is their homemade black bean burger (vegan upon request). Comes with lettuce tomato and red onions. Add cheese for a buck. Comes with fries.

A steal at $4 at happy hour. $6 normal. Add a Pabst for $1. Beer and a burger for $5.

"Snacks" was a little saddened by the lack of plain mustard (just dijon) but is happy with any food that comes with a weapon.

We didn't sample them but they also have the B.A.M.F. Meat burger. $6 at happy hour and $8 regular price.

Bonus Pinball!

Amnesia Brewing

This place was a crowd favorite. Portland Hamburglers "HoldEverything", "SpecialSauce", "Hamburgler", and "Bun-dita" (your favorite pet food shop proprieter of Meat for Cats & Dogs) travel North to sample these brown biscuits.

Large natural ground beef, grilled out on the patio for viewing pleasure with the usual suspects and chips. It was nice to have a condiments bar as well. There was some talk of something called a "Hamwallet". Have to figure it out next time.

Beer Advocate seems to like the beer there as well.

The Maiden (formerly Maiden In The Mist)

A couple Portland Hamburglers meet up in search of sliders and ended up at The Maiden. Well, as it happens our own "PattyPusher" was up on the grill (not much of a surprise) exclaiming "photo time in the kitchen....I make sexy." [ Who gets you hot kitchen burger action....Portland Hamburglers..thats who ]

The Maiden has three burger configurations that come with chips or salad (no fries).

"Burgertime" "SpecialSauce" and the "Hamburgler" went with the sliders. These were great. Carmilized onions and cheddar dressed at $6.00/per 3 (or $4.00/per 3 at happy hours 3 to 6pm and 12 to 2am).

"HoldEverything" went with the Maiden Burger for $8.00. Chevre, roasted garlic, mushrooms, and natural beef sounded like a good way to top off a 45 mile bike ride.

They also have a cheeseburger for $7.00 and happy hour bucket of 5 Millers for $5.00 (full bar too).

Bonus Pickle!
