Burger Skills: Hamburgers VS Art

BurgerBlogger and BurgerHoover took a picutre of a burger:

So we were asked to enter this small group art show, Burgerhoover and I turned in a series of pictures with one common thread, a fun abstract layout and color.... I wont bore you with the concept and our definition. One of the photos is a letterbox shaped picture that measures 28"x15". The subject is one of interest to us, BURGERS shot in Burgerhoover's straight shot front flash style.

The local paper did a review of the Show put on by Venae Rivera from Santa Barbara (you can see her art in May at a group show here www.pdxfinegrind.com) they liked the burger shot, who doesn't right? Here's what they said about it "...and photography duo Manny and Kendall offer the viewer stark, off-kilter portraits of the mundane, capturing the essence of the a summers day with "FUN", a portrait of an inner tube floating on above swimming pool, and "MINE" a straight shot of a cheese burger with fires on a dinner plate."

So there you go burgers make a good meal and good art for your walls. If you're in Santa Barbara check the show at:

Art: Burger Murals

When art and burgers collide:

The cheeseburgers are part of a large collaborative mural that myself (Hilary Pollack), Juan Gabe, and Daniel Anderson put together for an art show at Worth Ryder Gallery in Berkeley in February 2007. I did the cheeseburgers as well as the girl and the toenails.

Art: Black Metal Fast Food Fight!

This just goes to show that burgers can bring everyone together (and where is the Portland metal/burger scene these days anyhow?)

Last weekend in Baltimore at the Lo-Fi Social Club there was a 2 day art show of tattoo artists, comic book illustrators, photographers, painters, and assorted other media, all coming together for some Black Metal [Wikipedia link] theme action known as Black Metal Fast Food Fight! aka BMFFF!. Oh, and of course about 40 bands, and a wrestler named "The Hamburglaress".

The City Paper (Baltimores weekly) had this to say:

...What began as a quirky idea of having black-metal clad wrestlers tumble through Happy Meals has become a focal point for a discussion of ugly American excess...

...Fast food's undeniable grotesqueness and black metal's ghoulishness give new absurd qualities to terror....

Art: The Real Deal Burger Cake

Next level! Thats not shaped like a hamburger? Nope. But, there is burger within. That there is a bonifed "Meat Cake" from Black Widow Bakery.

He went on to describe his ultimate wedding cake. "I hate that wedding cakes are all girly. There should be like a groom cake to go with the traditional wedding cake. A guy's cake. Like..made out of meat."

That thing is filled with ground beef, layered with Worcestershire and ketchup, covered in mashed potatos for frosting, then decorated with a drawing of a T-Bone.

I've never drawn a T-bone steak before. It didn't come out too bad, though there is a definite uterusy quality to it.

Burger Art: Andy Warhol

I dunno. It's Andy Warhol eating a hamburger. You can imagine some folks sitting around on the floor watching this quietly, then exclaiming how "genius" it is. Ugh!

I know. I know. A lack of an "art" education (Rap Snacks tell us to "Stay In Skool") doesn't let some folks see some kind of statement being made about pop culture because he is eating at Burger King. Sorry.

That Ray Johnson story in How to Draw a Bunny about his friend shooting a stack of the Marylin Monroe prints in the head is pretty good though.

Burger Art: Mike 2600

Former Portlander Mike 2600 makes some burger art. You might recognize some of his art from the Stones Throw / Adult Swim Chrome Childen tour or from MF Doom's 2004 tour. He claims he is more into Portland pizza then our burgers (he goes with the Burgerville), but his art tells us what is really on his mind. Check out his site for more info:

Twelve Car Pile-Up

So whats this burger all about:

I hand-painted a 20" Dunny for an art show I had at Kidrobot in San Francisco in March 2006. They sent me this huge white vinyl creature that just stared at me day after day. I had no idea what I was going to do with it, and then all of a sudden I got the idea to paint it like a cheeseburger and there was no turning back from that point.

So it went over well at the opening - nuff photos here : - and my friend working at Kidrobot suggested to the powers that be that it should end up as a mass-produced toy in one of the 3" Dunny series. They dug the idea and had me recreate the design on the computer. The burger will be part of Kidrobot's Dunny Series 4 and here's what it looks like as a little guy.

Perfection. I'm going to demand that all my sweets now come in hamburger form.
