Burger Tour: Mexico

Looks like BurgerBlogger and BurgerHoover had a little tour in Mexico again:

Burgerhoover and I went on a DJ/Photography tour to Mexico covering: Mexico City, Puebla, Tepozotlan, Playa Del Carmen, Tulum and Puerto Morelos, the hamburguesa's were plentiful and but so were the local fave eats... So we took some photos of these here culinary goods.

(Photo 1) This is a Hambuguesa from a restaurant on 5th avenue in Playa Del Carmen (near Cancun) The burger was good, specially after the gig we did, the pattie was made as if it was an "Albondiga" real tender and with rice in the mix.

(Photo 2) This Hamburguesa was ordered at "Mamitas beach club" in Playa Del Carmen, it was fastfood good, but the service was not so good.

(Photo 5) We also hit up a place called El BURGER KING a culinary chain of Hamburguesas from the E.E.U.U. (U.S.A.), this here cubist interpretation of an EL Whopper is from a restaurante in downtown Mexico city

New Zealand: The White Lady (Auckland)

Portland transplant TheCheeseTease shares the gospel and shows us the way:

I have never found a burger that parallels this. This is from a long white trailer, complete with white xmas lights, that gets dragged in by a tractor and dropped around the corner from Showgirls. They call it The White Lady. I regret to inform that I have never purchased the $16 Aucklander Burger, which consists of a 300-gram Scotch filet steak, and many other things I cannot possibly think to list.

Everything on their burgers comes from within a 100-km radius. Their meat has BITE; real chew. I have never tasted meat that was more meaty. They make their own buns, their own ketchup (referred to simply as "tomato sauce"). They grill their onions in meat grease. I was in the habit of sucking down one of these bitches 4-6x a week until I realized I could no longer fit into any of my clothes. I normally went for the $7.50 cheeseburger or $9.00 egg/cheese burger. Here is a photo of the latter.

North Korean Hamburgers

The folks over at Noko Jeans (an attempt to produce and import jeans from North Korea) found a hamburger in North Korea. Read all about it HERE

Just wanted to let you know that I had an excellent hamburger in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang. I thought it would be impossible to find it there considering they don't really care for anything American (jeans are forbidden for instance).

International: Finland - Jaskan Grilli

Hamburgler...one more time just for fun:

Speaking of using donuts as hamburger buns. Apparently if you are in Finland and drunk this is what you end up with (or at least I wouldn't think you could eat that sober). So whats in that thing? Donuts, some kind of pork patty, garlic sauce (looks like cheese to me), a hidden sausage, and that lame looking thing on the right is a burger.

Singapore: Relish

Wouldn't it be fun to go overseas and sample versions of hamburgers? More over at Chubby Hubby (great food blog) has the goods in Singapore. Spiced Lamb Pitta Burgers w/ Mint, BBQ Char-Siew Pork Burgers, Seafood Burger w/ Lemon Mayo, and Curry Chicken Burgers. And finally, something that seems to properly bridge the gap between breakfast and burgers...the Malaysian Ramly Burger (its in that second pic).

More over at Chubby Hubby.

Burger Tour: Tittsworth

That Baltimore sound is getting pretty big these last couple of years. Think I'm joking? Check out that tour schedule. Try and catch him before he gets on another plane (what no Portland?).

You could watch his MTV interview, listen to his XFM mix and do the Ed Lover dance, buy his records, or stalk him on MySpace if you are into that sort of thing. Or just go to New York and catch him at The Rub.

Today he fills us in on some Australian burgering:

The "Coat of Arms Damper." Damper being the bun, a traditional Aussie soda bread. "Coat of Arms" referring to the fact that you are eating both of their national animals in one stop shop! Ground Kangaroo burger w/ Emu prosciutto (the bacon looking stuff). Yummy!

Oh and you can keep up with him at: Tittsworth.com

International: Netherlands

Portland Hamburgler Khris Soden aka "I can't think of a good hamburger alias" (get it together already!) keeps showing us why Americans basically run the burger world.

Are we missing out on some secret, and stuck in European tourist burgerland? What gives? As a representative of Mostlandia I would think of better accommodations, but no. Check out Mostlandia's thing at PICA last year.

Anyhow. The diplomat has this report:

This "hamburger"came from a snack shop called "Lucky Hills". Snack shops are one step up from automats, but are still lower than eetcafes, which are of less quality than restaurants. This is a broodje hamburger kaas - a long way of saying cheeseburger.

Anyway, I couldn't really get a shot of the pattie itself, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The stuff on top of the burger is chopped onions (you get these unless you ask not to have them - I like onions, so that works out), and a more than generous squirt of mayonnaise, and another big squirt of barbecue sauce. I'm not sure what the Dutch call it, but it's barbecue sauce. This is in place of ketchup and mustard, which you will not receive, or even find as an option. Surprisingly, the bun of this burger was really tasty. The rest of it tasted how it looks, although I have to admit that the burger portion looked and tasted more like a burger than the one from the automat. I've included a picture of my alter ego, the Diplomat Monsieur Einrich Elkhart, tasting the burger. I think that his expression might say it all.

International: Hong Kong/Japan - Rice Burgers

I don't think any Portland Hamburgler would be caught eating at McDonalds, but what about McDonalds in Japan Hong Kong? A whole new palette of flavor crystals modified for your tasting pleasure sounds kind of interesting. Then someone in a boardmeeting earns their promotion by spurting out.....wait.....I got it....how about buns made of rice.

Then we have MOS Burger. Can't read Japanese, thats ok, me either. A Hamburger Today has some info for us in English.

These look a bit more appealing. That top one is vegetarian with seasoned bamboo shoots, carrots, and nori. That one on the bottom is Unagi. Yum!

International: Tilburg Train Station

Portland Hamburgler Khris Soden aka "I can't think of a good hamburger themed alias" (its getting old) returns from the Netherlands with this gem.

So this was called a hamburger, and it came out of this Automat. I got it in the Tilburg Train Station. It had some sort of special sauce and chopped onions on the top, and beneath the burger were a couple of pickles and a tomato. The thing is, the burger itself was not a hamburger, or at least, not what we in Portland would refer to as a hamburger. It was kind of like some sort of ground meat of unknown origin, then it was boiled, and then deep-fried. I confirmed with my friend Frank who lives here that, yes, this is the process of making these things. He had no idea whether it was beef or not either. It wasn´t the worst thing that I´ve ever eaten, especially since I was really hungry at the time, but it certainly wasn´t a hamburger.

International: Japan - Standard Burger UPDATE

Found out a little more about the previously posted Standard Deli Burgers. Alleluja lets us know that the "American Healthy" is made from 10 kinds of vegetables with Teriyaki taste. The possible butter burger is actually a cheese and nut burger and is only sold for one week in autumn.

She also leaves us with this gem. Standard's "Eyeball" Burger.

Check out this Standard Burger pic action from Yuichi Sakuraba as well.

International: England - Sumbitch Burger

Whats an American going to do in England for food? Improvise. Look at this spectacle. Can't find a buger bun in England, well grab that English Muffin or Crumpet and go at it. American ingenuity at its best and shining moment. Lets help Damon fulfill the "stereotypes about Americans" already.

So whats on this piece of madness:

English Muffin
Homemade Mayo (next level eh!)
Fried Egg
Kethcup
Bacon
Tomato
Cheese (German Gouda)
Double Up the Patty

International Edition: Japan - Standard Burger

UPDATED HERE

From time to time I think we will be writing up about burgers of interest outside of Portland. Everyone likes to travel right? If you have any pics of far off burgers let us know. Thanks. pdxburger@gmail.com

Portland burger establishments take note.

Standard Deli in Japan

Couldn't tell you much about these burgers because all the info is in Japanese, but for the love of god look at these beauties. If you have any pics or know anything about them, even eaten there...please let us know. Sure would love a ticket to go see them in the wild as well.

Not sure about this first one. Looks like some kind of Italian theme with basil, tomato sauce, eggplant, and god knows what else.

And what could the second one be? Is that a butter burger with peanuts, or just mayo.

That last one is called the "American Healthy". Looks like some salad mix, a tomato, and a sneaky onion ring.....or could it be polenta (next level).
