Burger Tour: Chicago/Detroit with ERS-1

BurgerBlogger did a little stint through Chicago, Detroit, Seattle, and Portland in route to Santa Barbara

Herein we follow the demise of his colon....nice too see booty beats are still alive in Detroit:

My crew SES had me up in Chicago to cause mayhem at the local hotdog stands and drink some Oldstyles till the break of dawn (literally, bars close at 4AM, burgers at 5:30am get to the eat them at 6:00 at home and enjoy one last Oldstyle)

That's a burger sticker in Wickerpark

This here burger was the healthiest burger I've had yet, a bit on the sweet side as the bun combined with the sweet onions made for a super sweet combo. I added some of the salad dressing and gave it that right amount of savory tangyness to the mix.

I had breakfast and lunch/dinner at that place. made it my office for 8 hours and worked. The oatmeal was good too. At Ear Wax

Below is Under dog Polish in Wicker Park. Summer colors. Insanely good, especially at midnight right before the dj set.

That's the homey that made the delish polish dog at Under dog.

The next night dj'ed, got the the place and my my crew Dj Abducted and his girl Julie got the urge for some tacos (can't have burgers all the time, specially in Chicago).

And, it just so happens that we found a place open at 6am, so i had the Enchiladas Poblanas, and since Chicago has the second biggest Mexican population in the US and A, well...it was super good. Mole sauce was just like the mole sauce in Puebla. Serious ting...not just the Oldstyle speaking.

Hardees at a truck stop near Kalamazoo.

After the Chicago madness we headed to DJ a couple jams in Detroit memorial day weekend.

Detroit pub burger, good standard burger. The fries where nicely spiced, the waitress wanted to come party with us as that was the vibe in Detroit, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival was going on and the Redwings won the cup.

Kenny & Zuke's - UPDATE

UPDATE: 3/5/07

Tittsworth was in town a week or so ago at Holocene and when not touring Asia and snacking on grasshoppers enjoys our own Kenny & Zuke's. You could catch up with him at SXSW next week or keep tabs here:

Recently while in Portland I was taken care of by some really amazing folks. In the process I was introduced to Kenny & Zuke's heavenly PASTRAMI BURGER. Not only was the pastrami fresh and the beef moist, but there's an impressive drink menu with regional, premium and even throwback sodas. Excuse the camera phone, it's all i had on me.

Shout out to coco & the crew! Can't wait to be back!!

ORIGINAL POST: 10/24/07

SpecialSauce called in a "snack break" and made the trip to Kenny & Zuke's with the Hamburgler:

From the size of the lunch crowd this place was serving up more hot beef then the fella's cruising by.

What you see there is a Pastrami Burger (its hiding under the cheese) with Swiss touching down at $11.75. Its was great. Bloody. And, had SpecialSauce giggling something about chocolate in her peanut butter.

They also have a regular burger for $8.50 with fries, cole slaw, or potato salad. Add cheddar, swiss, avocado, sauteed mushrooms, or carmelized onions for $1.00 a pop.

That sandwich was a whopper. A "Deli Club" with pastrami, turkey, swiss, tomato, and a price tag of $12.25.

California: Canters Deli

We are starting to get a bit worried about BurgerBlogger's colon. He's a soldier though, and has the daunting challenge of sampling Southern California (the hamburger mecca of the world) burgers.:

So Ryan B and I went to Canters Deli and ordered the burger. Hooked it up propa. Add jack and cheddar and Pastrami. Really good.

We sat at the bar on Sunday night and listened to some good comedian folks. I gotta big up the bartenders and Ryan B for giving a hand with the lighting of the burger shot.

The bartender said that Carl's Jr. shot their ad for the pastrami burger there.

Burger Tour: ERS-ONE/Magneto - Le Bon (Santa Barbara)

The BurgerBlogger is all over the place lately and thinks he finally found the best burger in the Santa Barbara area. You think the term "California Style" toppings has to include sprouts by now right?

By far the best burger in Santa Barbara.

I had the "Bison Burger" with three cheese, seasoned fries, and some fancy-ass $20 beer (I think we got ripped off).

My friend Marina had the Bison bleu cheese hammy with bacon, that was the ish, best one. That's what I'm getting next.

Burger Tour: ERS-ONE/Magneto (Atlanta)

You never know where the BurgerBlogger shows up these days (lots more coming soon). You can see him at the Goodfoot (2845 SE Stark) this Friday for his monthly night the "First Friday Super Jam":

Went to Atalanta over night for a meeting and walked around (watch out for the crackhead zombies).

I had a good bison burger at at place called Max Lager's, a brewery.

The next day went to a place I saw on the way to Max Lager's brewery. "Stake and Ale". I saw their menu had a burger and thought for sho... this is a winner, I try any burger form a steak house, but I missed the boat. Burger is only served during lunch so I had the next best thing. Escargot, onion soup and Santa Barabra wine (French things were in my head).

Burger Tour: Tittsworth

That Baltimore sound is getting pretty big these last couple of years. Think I'm joking? Check out that tour schedule. Try and catch him before he gets on another plane (what no Portland?).

You could watch his MTV interview, listen to his XFM mix and do the Ed Lover dance, buy his records, or stalk him on MySpace if you are into that sort of thing. Or just go to New York and catch him at The Rub.

Today he fills us in on some Australian burgering:

The "Coat of Arms Damper." Damper being the bun, a traditional Aussie soda bread. "Coat of Arms" referring to the fact that you are eating both of their national animals in one stop shop! Ground Kangaroo burger w/ Emu prosciutto (the bacon looking stuff). Yummy!

Oh and you can keep up with him at: Tittsworth.com

Burger Tour: ERS-ONE / Magneto (Mexico)

The BurgerBlogger wrapped up the last part of his tour in Mexico and did find some Hamburguesa action while there.

Here's a couple photos from my last tour in Mexico. I went to Mexico CIty, Guanajuato and San Luis Potosi, all in 4 days. Needless to say taking time to enjoy a Hamburguesa was out the question.

For the most part they are push carts or hitch trailers on the streets. There is a chain of hamburguesas that sets up a small shack that locks up. They set up in parques and not super busy intersections. (if i lived there i'd ask for one outside my door)

The one time i did have time to order a hamburguesa the place was out. But, it was at a place called Arachera House, and the hamburguesa had the choice of Pineapple and or chorizo on top of the queso and hamburguesa.

Since we could only eat in a hurry and at odd hours we ended up eating alot of the local drunk eateries at like 4am. I choose to have the local specialties. Above are Enchiladas Mineras, a specialty to Guanajuato Mexico.

Mexico City has tons of different things, but I had a "pambazo". It's a fried spicy bread with chirizo, potatoes filling, cheese, lettuce, and sour cream if you want. I went for broke.

If you plan to travel to Mexico on a food trip take a long term anti acid pill of your choice a half hour before eating, it coats your belly and the stomach acid kills the badness the food may have before it reaches your system. It works. Been touring in Mexico since 2001 and I swear by it..... Well, I also drink alot of tequila every time possible, that also kills the food bugs.

The BurgerBlogger is still out there lurking in East LA with the BurgerHoover. He is currently in Mexico touring and getting us pics of Hamburguesa's, but seems to have found a way to kill some downtime.

They snapped a bunch of photos of a ton of burger joints in East LA and now its up to us to tell them where to eat. Hence, their 1st annual East LA burger tour. Check it out and let them know where you want them to go.

Burger Tour: Pure Country Gold PART 1

Pure Country Gold are having a good year (and apparently still training for the upcoming Olympics). Willamette Week declared them one of the top 10 best new bands in Portland. They released a couple records, one on Empty and another 7" on Shake Appeal. And, just finished up their second tour this year that got kicked off opening for Roky Erickson at the Music Fest NW.

You can go see for yourself at Berbati's Pan on Friday October 12th, 2007.

They like to eat burgers too. Here follows a diary of the their brown nutritional requirments on the road in 2 parts.

Here's a report of our burger experiences from the Pure Country Gold "Great Divide" Tour '07.

For our first meal of the tour we stopped at a McDonald's inside a gas station in Ritzville, WA. It was a friday evening and the place was hopping with folks and we realized Ritzville is not as elegant a place as its name implies. We both ordered two $1 double cheeseburgers and a $1 order of fries from the value menu.

I’d been hearing about Dicks Burgers from friends in Spokane for years. When I woke up hung-over and starving that day I couldn’t wait to stuff some hot Dick’s in my mouth. Apparently its not related to the Dick’s in Seattle, but looks very much the same. I ordered a couple of cheeseburgers that were about a buck a piece I think. Again we decided to eat in the van and started making our way to Missoula.

I was pretty disappointed – the burgers looked and tasted not much different than the McBurgers from the night before. Jake ordered some kind of “Deluxe” burger that looked better and I think he was much happier than I.

Burger Tour: Pure Country Gold PART 2

PART 2

By the time we arrived in Missoula we were getting hungry again. We headed straight to the house-party where we were to be playing and where we were told there would be food waiting for us. We arrived to a fantastic and enormous food spread – there weren’t any burgers, but there were some great sausages being pulled off the grill right when we got there.

The sausages were homemade and made out of elk or antelope or some other Montana game animal - can’t remember. They were plenty of grilled onions and peppers, relish, kraut and a variety of mustards to top ‘em. Damn tasty!

The next day, midway through our long haul to Salt Lake City, we stopped in Idaho Falls in search of a place to relax and grab lunch. We decided on a bar called the Sports Castle so we could watch a little football while we ate. It was a pretty non-descript generic sports bar that smelled of bleach and grease. There was a couch and a couple of lounge chairs situated in front of the widescreen which were occupied by some large Idahoan folks. The menu was real cheap – I ordered a patty melt with tater tots for $5.

It wasn’t bad, but not good either – in fact it kinda tasted like nothing. But it served its purpose and was within my meager budget. Also, the side of ranch was complimentary and I didn’t even have to ask for it.

Spent the next couple of days burgerless, but by the time we were approaching Albuquerque I was ready. We headed straight to the club and parked the van and some local punk kid recommended a place called Lindy’s Diner right up the street. It’s a classic diner, probably around since the 20’s or 30’s, and there were photos of visiting famous people up all over the walls. If this place was good enough for Christian Slater then it was good enough for us! There was a film or TV shoot going on right outside and we figured that at any moment Jeff Goldbloom or Queen Latifah might walk in the place, but no such luck. Since this was New Mexico I figured I had to go with a burger topped with green chiles. We were the only folks in the place so the food came real quick.

The green chiles weren’t as flavorful as I hoped, but this was a great burger with a nice fluffy bun. The shredded lettuce, chiles, and pickles kept falling over the place, but it was nice to be able to grab a handful from the basket and make sure I had a proper amount of veggies with each bite. Jake went for a bacon mushroom burger I think. We were both real happy.

Spent a few more days sans hamburgers which was good for our systems and the van smelled a little less like ass for a little while. After waking up in the afternoon following a great show and late night in San Diego, our friend Thaddeus took us to Tobey’s 19th Hole – a quaint little greasy-spoon that’s on the grounds of a public golf course. We’d been here during our last visit to San Diego and knew we were in for a treat. There’s a great view of the San Diego skyline and golf course, the service is friendly and the food is cheap and fantastic. Most of us were in a breakfast mood and Burgermeister and I had the homemade corned beef hash and eggs (awesome!), but Jake was in a lunch mood and ordered the patty melt.

Jake devoured it quickly and I barely had time to snap this picture before it was all gone. It seemed there was too much bread as there were plenty of rye scraps left over when he was done, but Jake was pleased and his appetite well-sated.

EDITORIAL NOTE: The Burgermeister apparently showed up for this one.

We found ourselves in San Francisco several days later and decided to spend our afternoon at the wonderful Zeitgeist. A great bar with one of the largest and liveliest patios you’ll ever experience. The burgers are awesome here, but take a famously long time to get to you. Luckily we ran into our friend Alistair who is a regular and he made sure our burgers got to us relatively quick and for a discount. These were by far the best burgers of the trip and I was so busy scarfing mine down when it finally arrived I completely forgot to snap a picture, but I googled and found this pic (courtesy of leblog.exuberance.com).

The burgers are big and the huge slab of greasy cheddar dripped from the sides. They don’t do fries here – instead the burgers are served with a generous helping of crispy mashed up home fries. Highly recommended!

We played the last night of our tour at the Alibi in Arcata, CA. Their menu offers an extensive list of burgers and has long been one of my favorite burger spots, but on this night we were both in the mood for lighter fare.

That was it - a couple crappy ones and a few great ones. We're gonna hit the road again in the spring and we'll again report on our burger adventures.

Burger Tour: The Battle of Land & Sea (England)

What is it with England and large pile burgers? Sarah from the Portland band The Battle of Land & Sea sends us this report:

Here's a burger I had last week in Bristol England. It had a fried egg, beets, lettuce, tomato, meat patty, pineapple and special sauce on it...you got a free beer with it too.

Beets? Come again. I dunno, but I'm sure it was delicious.

The Battle of Land & Sea play at Holocene this Sunday (September 23rd) with Sleeping States, Pink Nasty, and Kele Goodwin.
