California: Cinco De Mayo (Culver City)

Proving right his massive investment in Pepto Bismol, PDX Gwailo continues

Cinco De Mayo, Culver City, CA
Formerly “Lucy’s #2”, Cinco De Mayo is a place I have been eating burgers in the middle of the night for over 20 years. Located on Sepulveda Blvd, between Venice and Washington in Culver City, CDM is a late night hang-out for fans of fast, full-menu, cheap entrees. I’ve always had cheeseburgers there, they offer a choice between regular and jumbo, and are able to make an ordinary institutional food service burger into something rather special. The griddle-friend 3 oz patty is placed on a well-toasted bun and served with the whole range of salad condiments, pickle, onion, mayo, salad, chopped lettuce.

As you know, I prefer mine simply with pickles, onion, mustard, but in my excitement at being back at CDM for the first time in ten years, neglected to tell them. They have incredible fresh squeezed juices, as well, if you are into that kind of thing.

Burger Tour: Mexico

Looks like BurgerBlogger and BurgerHoover had a little tour in Mexico again:

Burgerhoover and I went on a DJ/Photography tour to Mexico covering: Mexico City, Puebla, Tepozotlan, Playa Del Carmen, Tulum and Puerto Morelos, the hamburguesa's were plentiful and but so were the local fave eats... So we took some photos of these here culinary goods.

(Photo 1) This is a Hambuguesa from a restaurant on 5th avenue in Playa Del Carmen (near Cancun) The burger was good, specially after the gig we did, the pattie was made as if it was an "Albondiga" real tender and with rice in the mix.

(Photo 2) This Hamburguesa was ordered at "Mamitas beach club" in Playa Del Carmen, it was fastfood good, but the service was not so good.

(Photo 5) We also hit up a place called El BURGER KING a culinary chain of Hamburguesas from the E.E.U.U. (U.S.A.), this here cubist interpretation of an EL Whopper is from a restaurante in downtown Mexico city

The Hamburguesa tour continues. Hamburgler foregoes the salsa and reaches for the ketchup:

That there is $2.50 of cafeteria steak and $1.35 for the fries.

Link: Digest's Taco Burgers

.

While Karen Bernards is whipping up Thai Burgers the boys over there on Portlands Urban Honking blog Digest are taking the Hamburguesa to the next level.

Trying to have the best of both worlds they have created a "Taco Burger". What's not to love?

I'm really curious what the "Chili Cheeseburger Soup" is all about too.

La Sirenita UPDATED

UPDATE: 10/26/2007

There is this company called "Schmap" that trolls Flickr for photos to use in their city guides. Well, long story short. They ended up using our hamburguesa picture for the review of La Sirenita. Sorry La Sirenita, you are now a burger shack!

Check it out: Schmap

Continued tour of Portland Mexican restaurant hamburgers.

I have to go back again. They ran out of buns for their flagship burger, so I went with just a cheeseburger. Fair priced thin patty (no wonder the counter fellow kept asking me if I wanted a double) with american cheese and the standard condiments. Does the trick at the dirt cheap price, plus the fries are steak fries.

Burger Tour: ERS-ONE / Magneto (Mexico)

The BurgerBlogger wrapped up the last part of his tour in Mexico and did find some Hamburguesa action while there.

Here's a couple photos from my last tour in Mexico. I went to Mexico CIty, Guanajuato and San Luis Potosi, all in 4 days. Needless to say taking time to enjoy a Hamburguesa was out the question.

For the most part they are push carts or hitch trailers on the streets. There is a chain of hamburguesas that sets up a small shack that locks up. They set up in parques and not super busy intersections. (if i lived there i'd ask for one outside my door)

The one time i did have time to order a hamburguesa the place was out. But, it was at a place called Arachera House, and the hamburguesa had the choice of Pineapple and or chorizo on top of the queso and hamburguesa.

Since we could only eat in a hurry and at odd hours we ended up eating alot of the local drunk eateries at like 4am. I choose to have the local specialties. Above are Enchiladas Mineras, a specialty to Guanajuato Mexico.

Mexico City has tons of different things, but I had a "pambazo". It's a fried spicy bread with chirizo, potatoes filling, cheese, lettuce, and sour cream if you want. I went for broke.

If you plan to travel to Mexico on a food trip take a long term anti acid pill of your choice a half hour before eating, it coats your belly and the stomach acid kills the badness the food may have before it reaches your system. It works. Been touring in Mexico since 2001 and I swear by it..... Well, I also drink alot of tequila every time possible, that also kills the food bugs.

Javier's

Continuing tour of Mexican restuarant Hamburguesa's.

I don't know how much longer or how many more Hamburguesa's there are out there in Portland. Lets hope not many. "Burgermeister" tackled this thing an hour after it had been sitting about. Hope she is ok.

Michoacan

Continued tour of Portland Mexican restaurant hamburgers.

I originally planned on getting some tacos, but with a Hamburguesa on the menu I can't help myself. This cheeseburger comes in at $6.00 with fries. It was big, I would think almost a 1/2 pounder handmade patty, american cheese, and the usual suspects. I don't expect much from a Mexican restaurant when it comes to hamburgers, but they usually come with a cheap price, shucks. I'll spare you anymore commentary.

Ole Ole Hamburguesa

Continued tour of Portland Mexican restaurant hamburgers.

Three burgers to choose from. I went with "The Hamberguesa". It had all the fixins, american cheese, and guacamole. It's actually almost just like a Carl's Jr. "Six Dollar Burger" with spicy guacamole, but it doesn't have bacon, and it doesn't end up being over $8.00 with fries and a drink. The Hamberguesa comes in at $4.00. While this isn't such a deal as King Burrito's "King Burger" for $2.65 the guacamole almost makes it worth it. The bummer is no french fries on the menu?

King Burrito

First stop on the tour of Portland Mexican restaurants and carts that serve up burgers. Fantastic. For $2.65 the "King Burger" you get a oversized burger shaped to fit onto a roll. Not much frills going on here of course, but you know its hand made from all the bits on onions in the patty. American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, and thousand island dressing. I have been recommended to try the chili cheese burger, but figured I would need to take that home and put a fork and knife to it. I'll be back to this one.
