VeganMac (from the Portland website OnPDX hits 8 the hard way and finds a Vegan burger in Vegas....yep!:

Being Vegan in Las Vegas is like being a nun at a strip club..

This burger is THE Vegan burger at the Burger Bar (and possibly the only Vegan burger in Las Vegas) at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. The Burger is two portabello mushroom caps with sauteed vegitables between them (Eggplant, Red Pepper, Zucchini). The guy I was with lives in Texas and he snapped this picture because he didn't think anyone in Texas would believe such a burger could ever exist.

It was mighty tastey.

The cost for the burger a whopping $15.45 with tax and tip!

ProgressiveBurger visits our local real estate developers (when does the new one open downtown again?) built from fleece and sandals:

For years I complained that there was no vegetarian burger option for happy hour. Every Friday I became more and more distraught. I had to pay $6.75 for a Boca or Gardenburger while my workmates paid $3.50 for a happy hour meat slab o a bun. Last January my years of weekly outrage and complaints paid off, they added the Boca or Gardenburger option to the happy hour menu! And at $3.90 it was a bargain. Comes with the standard greasy Micminimal's fries and order it without the "secret sauce" and a vegan option is born.

Macadam's

Lets call him ProgressiveBurger (what, you don't like early Genesis?.........ears and a heart) and he doesn't put meat to the face:

This is about the only vegetarian option at another wise normal boring SW Portland restaurant. I ordered mine without dairy so it was minus the cheese and "secret sauce". The fries are plain, the sandwich itself was quite good. Vegan on a business lunch rating of "Make sure they pay."

Laurelthirst Public House

nananananannananana nanan.....batman and veggie burgers. GrillMaster has the com..uh...er....some kind of sonic cellphone:

Quadburger and I stopped by the Laurelthirst Public House on Glisan for two of their sin verggie burgers, which are a homemade patty made out of sunflower seed, walnuts, and some other stuff with bacon, swiss, and cheddar on top with the usual lettuce, tomato and onions on onion roll.

We got the spicy ones which throw in some chipolte and corn into the mix... a little too much chipolte this time (i could still taste it while eating ice cream 2 hours later) but whatever... you can have potato chips, potato salad, green salad, or a cup of beans as a side... Too bad they don't make fries, seems like they would do a great job at making them... excellent beer selection too! I'll be back, that's for sure...

Club 21

UPDATE: 3/4/08




Burgermeister and BeefJake:

Burgermeister had an afternoon burger attack and went with BeefJake back to Club 21.

BeefJake had the regular cheeseburger and it must have been delicious because it was gone before Burgermeister could snap a photo.

Burgermeister had the bacon cheese with everything on it, which includes Thousand Island dressing. Yum. The burger dripped all over the fries, which is always a good sign.

There's also a great selection of smooth jams for a smooth Saturday afternoon.

Originally a Russian Orthodox Church, then a stint as a bar known as "The Shadows" before taking on the persona "Club 21" since 1958.

The Hamburgler and Pickles & Ammo needed a well deserved lunch break and clue us in.

While sitting in one of Portlands finest dining establishments recently, the chef (who shall remain nameless) highly recommended this place as his favorite burger in town (I'm sure much to the horror of the other listening patrons). Well, he was right. This is actually a great burger.

The first one up there is a bacon cheeseburger with all the usual suspects for $7.00 with chips. Add fries, tots, or salad for $1.00

That beast on the last photo is the "Club 21 Specialty Burger". 1/3 lb of "Prime Beef", ham, cheese, egg, bacon, and usual suspects (mayo and thousand island). $7.50 with chips.

They also have a Gardenburger for $6.50

The Hamburgler and Pickles & Ammo (aka my MS is not a STD, educate yourself already, but does come with handicap parking permits and canes with swords in them) flounder into a basement:

Long gone are the days of the Rabbit Hole and the 25 cent beers, but these boys, and gal are making a run at it.

This burger has got a little somethin'. Homemade Apple-Ketchup is a nice touch.

That right there is a BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger at the classy price point of $6.00. It gets Les Schwab up in there with Natural Country Beef that is hand crafted, but no tweeters for a dollar (sorry about the Portland local tv reference).

Blitz Bar

Hamburgler was downtown trying to avoid urban attention seekers:

This place is behind Powell's and looks pretty small when you walk in, but then you go downstairs and you find out its a lot bigger.

Featured here is the "Blitz Bomber". Bacon, Mushrooms, Cheese, Onion Strings, and Jack Daniel's glaze. Picture aside, this thing is huge. Couldn't finish it, so its a fill up at $8.00 with fries. Can't complain, it's going to be a one meal day.

You can substitute for Gardenburger as well.

Hamburgler seemed excited that the US Dollar could still buy something, at least in the states:

Skipped the bangers, scotchegg, ploughmans, and went with a big olde burger. $7.25 with homemade fries. Of course you could cover them in vinegar if you wanted too.

Burgermeister and VeggiePatty give us a North Portland update. What? Bacon is a great topping on veggieburgers:

Went to Tom's Pizza & Sports pub on Lombard. There was about 25 big screen tv's which wasn't so bad until the sound went on. Some college football game.

I had the "Rodeo Burger" (first and second pictures), which has cheddar, bbq sauce and bacon. Burgermeister got it with the veggie patty which was just delicious. It comes with a salad or french fries. Got the salad which is topped with every pizza topping known to man.

VeggiePatty got the veggie patty ( um duh! ). She ate it all and said it was good.

Mock Crest

The PattyPusher returns with Burger-FreeBurger, and finds Mock Crest after a recent cyclecross race:

Let’s start by saying Patty Pusher is not that bright. He actually pays money to ride his bicycle in the worst circumstances imaginable. After the recent USGP of cyclocross race at PIR, where conditions were “epic” (see pic 1), he had a powerful craving for an “epic” burger to match.

Guided by some kind of mystic forces, probably the gale force winds of the day, he miraculously landed at Mocks Crest Tavern with his sherpa, Burger-FreeBurger. While Burger-FreeBurger has taken a vow of critterless eating, she was a fabulous guide in steering the pair to hot toddies that brought sweet sweet circulation back to Patty Pusher’s toes. Once able to focus on the menu instead of frozen appendages, he quickly zeroed in on the words Burger, Swiss, and Tots. Done and done.

The burger arrives and is luckily documented before it disappears. While possibly not deserving the “Portland’s Best Burger” designation it gets in the menu, the meat is sweet, the LTO fresh, the mayo thick, and the Tots hot ‘n’ crispy. Totally worth the $6.95. The burgerless burger had by Ms. Burger-FreeBurger was with a Gardenburger patty and the usual suspects, also fully respectable.

Between 32nd and 33rd on SE Hawthorne is the foodcart Veggielicious. Quite a few offerings, but burgers it is. Three "burgers" to choose from. For $4.00 the "I can have a cheezeburger?" does the trick. Watch out though. That special sauce is probably healthy and good for you while tasting delicious.

The cafeteria at New Seasons is pretty good. For $5.95 you get a char-grilled "Country Natural Beef" burger with your choice of tons of condiments. No fries, but ample selection of chips and snacks.

They also have a selection of turkey, veggie, and chicken burgers.

Dots

It's been awhile since the fire (doesn't seem like it though does it?).

SweetHotMustard recently won some raffle prize giftcertificate for Dots from a fundraiser for RideOn (those folks that ride a mini-scooter to the bar you are at, then drive you home so your car is there in the morning for $5.00....soon hopefully). Well, there is burgers on the menu so they got took with the Hamburgler

Both of these were $6.50. That first one is a cheeseburger, then a bacon cheeseburger with a twist. Herb Creamcheese (SweetHotMustard swears by creamcheese as the best topping on a Hot Dog, and now a hamburger).

That monster mess of fries is Bacon and Cheese for $5.00. Add bbq, ranch, 1000 Island, Spicy Sour Cream, Spicy Tofu, or Bueu Cheese.

They have lots of vegan and vegatarian options as well.

Rogue Ales Public House

The Hamburgler gets back in the game and checks out one of them "brewpubs" that seemed to be such a trend back in the 90's.

The burgers here come in a bit more expensive (that bacon cheeseburger you see was $9.75). Does not come anywhere close to other burgers at that price or less (Slow Bar, Club 21, North 45, Amnesia), probably due to some overhead issue. sigh.

Should have skipped the regular burger and went straight for the "American Kobe Beef" burger. Those start at $11.95 for a 1/2 pounder, and up to $14.95 for bacon/cheese. This will probably need an update.

Kind of turned off by the whole place. It's not that the beer is bad, or that the burger is bad, it's when you are eating here you are bombarded with branding of the Rouge empire and the room feels like mail order catalog "bar theme".

Beulahland UPDATE

Special Sauce, Snacks and Pic Wic have a return visit to Beulahland to get a handle on their vegiburger action.

We went to Beulahland for their Wednesday cheap burger night. From 6pm until the kitchen closes veggie burgers are $4 and meat are $3.

Special Sauce and Snacks went for the homemade veggie burgers(not vegan) one with cheese for and extra $0.50 and one without. This is one of our favorite veggie burgers in town though it can be a bit crumbly at times.

Snacks was disturbed by the brown mustard in the yellow mustard squeeze bottle. "It's like finding special sauce in the ketchup bottle". He was also saddened by the lack of weapon with this burger.

Pic Wic went for the Bacon Cheese burger. All burgers come with chips and not only a bonus side pickle but pickles on the burger too. And yes we were playing cribbage while snacking.

The "Hamburginator" chimes in after a recent stop at Beulahland with this tasty burger. I've experienced this one as well. Its not bad at all, but I always wish I had French Fries with it (I'll save the whining though...It's like complaining about a bar being smokey...kind of makes you look like an ass). Bonus Pickle!
