Burger Skills: Hamburgers VS Newspapers

Oh my. We got top billing from the Oregonian newspaper today, right on the front page of the food section. And we were wondering why there was an influx of email today. You can find it online here as well:
Oregonian FoodDay: 100 Things We Love
The Portland hamburger blog: So many food blogs take themselves a tad too seriously, but this free-spirited blog, devoted to finding the city's best burgers and fries, is downright fun. From dive taverns to blue-chip restaurants, they seek out the patties that merit praise. One word of caution: There's lots of photography, so looking here will be absolute torture if you're hungry. Christopher's Gourmet Grill
UPDATE: 12/14/2008
BurgerMeister is on a burger rampage:
Bacon, cheese, mmmmmmmmm.
-----------------
UPDATE: 6/6/08

The Grill Master gets some:
I know that people have taken pics of this place before, but i don't know if they took pics of the bacon cheese burger, so here are some!
Right now this is my favorite burger in town (the veggie burger with bacon at the Laurelthirst tavern comes in a close second, though). Reasonalbly sized patty, shredded lettuce, nice chunks of tomato, good sauces, and they get the bacon just right. Not too chewy and not burnt. Normally i don't like the steak cut fries, but they season these guys just right!
The only weird thing about today's trip there was the music. Normally they are playing R&B but today they played a recording of some dude covering "more than words" by Extreme. Sucks to be that person! Another thing that changed is that they now have a burger basket deal, where you can get a 20oz soda and fries for a little bit more. Not sure why they needed that as the prices were already good ($4.50 for a bacon cheeseburger,) but I'm not complaining!

Hamburgler:
This place has got some great burger deals. That burger up there is the "Louisiana Cheese Burger" with a delicious spicy hot link topper along the usual suspects. With fries its $5.50.
They also have chicken burgers, fish burgers, and the "Man Up Cheese Burger" (bacon, egg, double cheese, and a hot link).

Burger Tour: Chicago/Detroit with ERS-1
BurgerBlogger did a little stint through Chicago, Detroit, Seattle, and Portland in route to Santa Barbara
Herein we follow the demise of his colon....nice too see booty beats are still alive in Detroit:
My crew SES had me up in Chicago to cause mayhem at the local hotdog stands and drink some Oldstyles till the break of dawn (literally, bars close at 4AM, burgers at 5:30am get to the eat them at 6:00 at home and enjoy one last Oldstyle)
That's a burger sticker in Wickerpark
This here burger was the healthiest burger I've had yet, a bit on the sweet side as the bun combined with the sweet onions made for a super sweet combo. I added some of the salad dressing and gave it that right amount of savory tangyness to the mix.
I had breakfast and lunch/dinner at that place. made it my office for 8 hours and worked. The oatmeal was good too. At Ear Wax

Below is Under dog Polish in Wicker Park. Summer colors. Insanely good, especially at midnight right before the dj set.
That's the homey that made the delish polish dog at Under dog.
The next night dj'ed, got the the place and my my crew Dj Abducted and his girl Julie got the urge for some tacos (can't have burgers all the time, specially in Chicago).
And, it just so happens that we found a place open at 6am, so i had the Enchiladas Poblanas, and since Chicago has the second biggest Mexican population in the US and A, well...it was super good. Mole sauce was just like the mole sauce in Puebla. Serious ting...not just the Oldstyle speaking.
Hardees at a truck stop near Kalamazoo.
After the Chicago madness we headed to DJ a couple jams in Detroit memorial day weekend.
Detroit pub burger, good standard burger. The fries where nicely spiced, the waitress wanted to come party with us as that was the vibe in Detroit, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival was going on and the Redwings won the cup.

Nevada: In N' Out (Las Vegas)

SpecialSauce keeps us asking why there isn't one here:
We all got Double Doubles, two patties with cheese and animal style, of course. For $5.39 our burgers came with fries and a medium drink.

Hamburgler and Pickles&Ammo sneak away from work with one of them kids from North Portland's classy drinkin' spot the Florida Room (did you know one just opened in Miami Beach as well?) to put down some quickies:
Normally shy away from the fast food, but vacation diets permit such extravagance (and everyone telling us we had to go there) and the mythical lore of the lords message drawing us in (there are Christian messages on some of the packaging apparently).
All were pleased with this. Pickles&Ammo was befuddled since he has never eaten anything but the Double Double Animal style that there were single patty burgers at the table. The production line in this place is awe inspiring. It puts JIT inventory babble and homemade GTD moleskines to shame all with only one register.
As far as fast food burgers In N' Out lives up to the reputation. It's dirt cheap, tasty, and makes you feel funny to order from the secret menu.
Yep, those fries are done up "Animal Style".

Interview: Neil Hamburger
UPDATE: 6/13/08
Yep, he is in town tonight at the Doug Fir if you are not too busy playing Wizard.
America's Funnyman joins us for some slow-balls. He will be at the Doug Fir June 13th and hopefully won't have that Bonnie 'Prince' Billy fellow keeping him up all night in the hotel room.
You can console him about his wife and the dentist here as well.
You share a name with one of America's food groups. Do you think you can attribute this to your success?
That's what we were hoping for when I first hit the show-biz circuit. It used to be that everyone loved hamburgers--but then the whole cholesterol crowd came in, and the hamburger sandwiches, my name, and my career all went on the skids.
What's your favorite hamburger(s) and preference?
I don't really eat those anymore, my stomach is full of holes and could not take it. But I have eaten my fair share of them over the years. I used to eat a lot of these 50 cent "Monster Burgers" at Pete's Fish & Chips in Tempe, Arizona. They started out the size of an LP album when they hit the grill, but by the time they were done frying, they were the size of a 45 RPM single.
Got any favorite hamburger joints while on tour?
I really like Local Burger, in Lawrence, Kansas. They have a "vegan burger" that is quite nice, and easy for stressed-out, ulcer-ridden, guilt-plagued comedians to digest. They have burgers on their menu made out of everything imaginable, from deer, to buffalo, to millet, to spiders, and possibly unwanted children. (An investigation is pending). I also have always liked the "Route 66 Bacon Cheese Burger" at Lovin Spoonfuls in Tucson, Arizona. It's sort of a "ghost" burger, in that the cheese is not cheese, the bacon is not bacon, the burger is not a burger, and the restaurant is nowhere near Route 66. But it is delicious.
You have been making quite a few TV appearances. Ever come across a hamburger in the greenrooms?
The last time I was on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" I was hungry, and they gave me a menu for a place up the street called "Hamburger Hamlet". I can't remember what I ordered...maybe the "Vodka Bucket"?
(Jimmy Kimmel Live appearance: LINK)
Got any current or upcoming projects you could tell us about?
I recently completed a new country and western album called "Neil Hamburger Sings Country Winners". It is a "personality record", in the vein of the old albums by Telly Savalas, or William Shatner, or Leonard Nimoy. Non-singing singing celebrities. I was thrilled to have Prairie Prince, the legendary drummer from The Tubes, play on the album, along with the best guitarist, bass player, pedal steel player, and backing vocalist in all of California, and as a result, my vocals are particularly shameful. But the songs are built around my miserable experiences and thus the fans may find it interesting anyway.

Country Cat

WhopperChomper reports....we got both kinds here.....Country and Western:
The "Heritage Burger" ($11) comes on a French onion bun with a slice of white cheddar & garlic mayo. It also comes with a HUGE pile of really thin stringy onion rings that are REALLY good. The patty was very thick, which made for a very dense, flavorful burger. All in all, a unique and respectable effort. The onion rings make the whole thing worth the effort. The fried chicken looked very good, but I'm glad I tried the burger. :)

Deschutes Brewery

Pickles N Ammo and the Hamburgler joined the masses:
This place is huge. Nicely done. Just look at the size of that HVAC system and enough copper to keep you playing Grand Theft Scrap Metal Thief for a year. We are suppose to say something about their great beers, right?
That first one is the "Classic Cheeseburger with a Twist". $10.50 for 1/3 # natural beef (still not sure what that means though) marinated in Island Spices with Gruyere Cheese, House Pickles, Tomato, Grilled Red Onion, Mayo, and Pub Mustard. A bit different, not bad at all, acceptable price for the nature of the Pearl I would think.
The second one is an "Elk Burger". Natural Elk Patty with Roasted Shallot, Thyme Aioli, and Gruyere Cheese for $11.95. Of course it was a bit gamey, its elk........car.........game on.

Slow Bar: UPDATED 04.15.08
UPDATE: 04.15.08

Hey, we all know it's time to pay the man, but you really can't stop eating the burger version of architect fish n chips. PattyDaddy and and one of our best photographers HambaghaStakee can't stop:
Bloody Mary with tomato infused vodka was AWESOME! And the burgers... (Slow top, Winter bottom)... just like everyone else says except they forgot to say HOLY FREAKIN' COW these are good. Man. About the best anyone could ever hope for in a hamburger. Really. This is it. This is what it's all about. It's beyond words. Go to Slow Bar and eat and drink. Go there now. Eat and drink. It's so good. So good... t's genius. Honestly. Go there. God it's good.
Cooked to order still only $9 each. Bloody $6.50. Plan on a big tip 'cause it's worth it.
UPDATE: 03.23.08
Folks can't get enough of this burger:
Burgermeister and PattyPusher had an awesome Saturday afternoon burgering date.
Burgermeister decided on the never disappointing Slowburger, which is a towering monster hell-bent on intimidation: Onion rings, Gueyure cheese, and cherry tomato relish. Burgermeister isn't afraid (once again, Strawberry Mountain Beef. Delicious.)
Pattypusher opted for the less daunting, yet brilliantly crafted Winter Slowburger: Cheddar, Blue Cheese, Panchetta, and the Tomato Relish. PattyPusher had this to say: "Cherry tomato relish has succeeded in being what ketchup wishes it was".
Please note the bloody mary, it's heavenly.
------------
UPDATE: 11.20.07

The Slow Bar has become a Portland Hamburgers favorite. WhopperChomper and ToastedBun give us their take:
WhopperChomper & ToastedBun stopped by Slowbar on a slow Sunday night to watch some football and eat red-meat... Like any good American should.
ToastedBun went with the Slowburger, $9...Good to great burger & fixins. Bun got soggy toward the end which made consuming that last 1/8 lb fairly difficult. Sadly, the fries were lukewarm.
WhopperChomper had the Winter Slowburger, $9. 1/2 lb strawberry mountain natural beef, rogue creamery oregon blue cheese, grilled pancetta, cherry tomato relish. The burger rocked as always, and I particularly like the cherry tomato relish which adds a delicate touch to a not-so-delicate burger. My fries were also lukewarm & the ketchup was ICE cold. Cold ketchup is a weird complaint, but I'm very particular and it’s not good when your fries aren’t hot.
-------------------------------
UPDATE: 11.9.07

DJ Izm gives us a taste of his favorite burger in town.
He also has a taste of his trade. From Uffie to Soul II Soul, to some updated version of the Percolator mashed with The Crystals "Then He Kissed Me". Yep, he has a mix you can download: LINK
The Slow Bar burger is my favorite. $9 (extra w bacon), 1/2 pound Strawberry Mountain beef, lettuce, tomato, Gruyere cheese, and two Onion Rings on a perfect sesame seed bun. Served with either fries or salad.
Also available and really good the Slow Bar Winter Burger
1/2 pound Strawberry Mt beef, lettuce, tomato, pancetta, blue cheese, and a tomato relish, on a perfect sesame seed bun. Served with either fries or salad.
------------------------------------
POST: 8.28.07

Everyone told Hamburgler he should go there, and off he went:
Best $9.45 the Hamburgler has spent in a long time (usually a penny pincher when it comes to burger, but I will be handing them my dollars over and over again.) The "Slowburger" was perfect, juicy, and delicious.
This 1/2 lb. slab of ground beef from Strawberry Mountain, gruyere, onion rings, butter lettuce, pickle relish is unstoppable.

UPDATED: 3.24.08
AmericanCheese takes a break from making Origami Bunny's for Zombie Jesus:
The girlfriend and I decided a burger was in order so we stopped at this joint. (and wow, the corner of 33rd and Killingsworth ain't how it used to be, that's for sure).
Anyway, the photo is of the "Firehouse Burger". Half pound patty, two onion rings, pepper bacon, sliced jalapenos, and something called "Hades" sauce, which is just a spicy bbq sauce as far as I can tell. $8.75 with fries. Good fries too.
It was actually pretty good for standard fancy pub fair, but I paid for it in the morning. Spicy!
Nice place, a little strangely put together, but whatever. Also the best bottled beer selection I've seen this side of the Horse Brass.
All in all, good. A little spendy for my tastes, but I'm cheap.

Hamburgler:
I couldn't tell you anything about this place. I was at work and asked if I wanted a burger. Yes Please! The burger overall was alright. Nothing to really complain about, but not much to say either. Overdone, and the fries looked like they were covered in some kind of seasoning, but lacked any flavor at all. I dunno.

Burger Skills: Pizza VS Hamburgers
So many choices in America these days. Why not just take our two national food groups and put them together already.
Oh my. Cheese sauce filling with pizza sauce mixed in. Dare you. (photo from Afiler)
This is the "55 Bacon Cheeseburger" Pizza from Mission Pizza in San Francisco. Mustard Sauce, Pepper-Jack Cheese, Bacon, Red Onions, Ground Beef, Tomatoes, and Pickles (photo from Ollinkatl)
How could we forget the the portly Supersized Meals and their wonderful deconstruction of American cuisine.
Then there is the former Chicago Cub Micheal Barrett who had a custom "signature" Deep Dish Chicago style pizza at Gino's North called the "Bacon Cheeseburger" pizza.

Nevada: Fatburger (Las Vegas)

Looks like a burgler bonanza. PicklesNAmmo, Burgermeister, VeggiePatty, and the Hamburgler splurge:
Fatburger is owned by Portland based Fog Cutter Capital Group Inc. (at least its headquarters) and has a couple celebrity franchisee's like Queen Latifah and Montel Williams, but still not one in Portland to date.
They have 1/2 pounders, 1/3 pounders, baby burgers, fat fries, skinny fries, and homemade onion-rings, real milkshakes, and a salad wedge. Of course you top it with bacon, egg, chili, and cheese as well.
Make no mistake, this is fast food, but they do it a bit better. No complaints here.
