Jim Dandy

ExtraBacon gives us an update:

After driving by Jim Dandy so many times, my wife and I decided it was finally time to check it out.

She ordered The Works (2 patties, cheese, bacon, ham & egg). The patties were pre-formed and frozen, but they had a really good flavor. The onions were especially good, and tasted great with the egg. All in all, it was a good burger!

I ordered the Pépe Dog... A foot long hot dog, wrapped in bacon, then covered with onion, pepperoncini, tomato, and grated cheddar cheese. I think the bacon-wrapped dog was deep fried. The outside had a good crispyness, and the quality of the dog itself was very good. The pepperoncinis added the perfect amount of spice. One of the best dogs that I've had (outside of my own kitchen)!

The decor inside Jim Dandy's is great. Lots of pictures of old Portland.

Definitely worth checking out!

We went to Jim Dandy. Deep in Parkrose, it's like another world out there.

Right to the point. This is seriously one of the best burgers we've had. Ever.

First pic is the Texas burger. Bacon, cheddar, bbq sauce, and a big ass onion ring. Condimentspreader loved it. I wanted it.

Second is of the "Jim Dandy" burger. American cheese, bacon, mushrooms, and some secret sauce that I think had a hint of bbq in it. Whatever it was, it ruled.

Burgers were not overdone, just right. Buns were tasty, not too spongy.

This place has it all. Hot dogs wrapped in bacon, shakes made to order, crinkle cut fries, old men smoking out on the patio saying that this is the best burger in town, etc.

It really has been there since 1937 as well. It was just in a trailer before (according to the waitress).

Go. Now.

Classic diner that hasn't been tarnished with new retro furnishings. This burger doesn't have much to say about itself from the other burgers in town, but is a winner for pure simplicity. Do one thing, and do it well. My personal favorite thing about this place is that your burger comes on its own individual plate. Skyline serves it up cut in half (you will need to for the 1/2 pounders) and uses American and Cheddar cheese. This burger doesn't hide from the classic American style burger, a sesame seed bun, and all the standard fixings. Great old-fashioned burger for about $3.50.

My friend stepped up to the "Everything Steak Burger" that had bacon, cheddar, fried egg, and all the extras for $8.75. It looked delicious. Didn't try all the other Americana fair, but it all looked like good diner food (breakfast, milkshakes, ect). Worth the short drive to get away from town for a second.

Fuller's

AmericanCheese finds a burger down the street from where he probably spent his youth in a warehouse in 1993 raving up super (anyways, he spelled "oldschool" with a "k"..lets leave happy hardcore in the bins) :

Oldskool coffee shop in now what is considered the "Pearl", but you wouldn't know you were in yuppieville by spending time in this place. Great service, good breakfasts, and seriously, some of the best seafood specials in the city. Fresh panfried razor clams, fries, and slaw for $7.50? Wow.

But we went for the burger. I'll keep it simple. Good burger, made to order. You'll be mad if you don't like pickles though, It seems like they put a whole jar on mine.

Hamburgler:

This place is a lot bigger then expected.

Nicely executed classic diner cheeseburger complete with well appointed special sauce. It will cost you $5.75 and comes with fries. Not going to claim its better then the Nob Hill burger up the street, but comes pretty close.

Gardenburger's and the usual combinations available as well.

My Father's Place

Look's like Pickles & Ammo and the Hamburgler get their drinking training wheels on for lunch:

This is fill-er-up, soak up the alcohol, hangover cure-all, grease bomb that comes cheap. It's not going to win any awards, but it does but a brick back in your belly.

Burgers start at $4.50 with fries (add only 25 cents for Gardenburger, boca available as well). That first one up there is a Bacon Mushroom Swiss that takes $5.75 to get on board. That next one is their "Western Bacon Cheese Burger" with bbq sauce and onion rings for $6.25.

They also have a colon clogger, the "My Father's Place Special Burger" with bacon, ham, 2 cheeses, and an egg.

Not bad. Reminds us of how A&W/Dairy Queen use to be when they were small town diners serving up the soft serve (dipped please). $7.20 on this "basket" of bacon cheeseburger with fries, coleslaw, and drink. Patty is paper thin, but fulfills.

CondimentSpreader is still out there burgering and eating foreign objects.

Just south of Tacoma St. in Sellwood is Mike's Drive In. Another old-school joint, but no longer delivering curbside on skates.

Extensive menu with no less than 12 burger jump off points.

I had the mushroom with swiss. Have to say it started out as one of the better burgers I've tasted, although somewhat suffering from the 'soggy bun' syndrome, which I can work around. At some point I started wondering about a mushroom that I was having trouble chewing down. Turned out to be a rather large chunk of thick plastic. (see pic)

I really want to like the place, but when I informed the counterperson of my woe, she sorta shrugged it off and said, "oh sweetie, that's probably just from when they take the patties outta the pan....".

Inexpensive and tasty, but still...

Hollywood Burger Bar

Pickles & Ammo and the Hamburgler visit one of Portland's burger classics, the Hollywood Burger Bar. Somewhere in the 1920's this was a trolly ticket sales booth, then a dry cleaners before becoming the burger joint we know today since 1954.

Inka (pictured above in all her Betty Boop glory) has owned this joint for about 18 years now and is still serving the burger that is winning head-to-head battles.

Pickles & Ammo hit the bullseye and put down a swiss/mushroom/bacon while the Hamburgler kept to the classic bacon/cheese.

Burgers start at $5.00 with fries/potato salad/cottage cheese/chips and top off with the "Hollywood Ultimate Double" for $8.00 with two patties/bacon/swiss and cheddar. Gardenburger option available as well.

Johnny B's

Established Portland diner that is more of a breakfast joint, but they have burgers on the menu so Portland Hamburglers "Pickles & Ammo" and "Hamburgler" were there.

A theory about covering the chair legs with tennis balls provides optimum comfort while sitting (just don't move the tables). Don't get us wrong. They are some of the nicest folks in town, and it's nice to see blue-collar hold outs in this soon to be re-developed area (please...oh please don't call it the "Diamond District").

"Pickles & Ammo" had this to say:

It is the nature of a Chili-Burger to be smothered in chili...just a little over-done...but I wouldn't cast it in a disparaging light.

It's a diner, so "fill-er-up" is what this is about and the "Johnny B's Hunger Cheese San" (not pictured) at $10.95 would put you in that one-meal-a-day diet. 1/2 pounder, on grilled sourdough, fried egg, grilled ham, bacon, and the usual suspects.

Cheeseburger (pictured with American Swiss) starts at $6.50.
